As the game entered added on time, Colchester were given a glimmer of hope as Brown was dismissed for a second bookable offence, but with the visitors happy to sit in and crowd the area, Accrington were able to see out the game and leave with all three points.
Colchester now need to pick themselves up after their second defeat in three home games as they travel to Crawley Town on Tuesday night.
